Volunteering in India

Personal welcome from India Country Director, Shaleen Rakesh

Shaleen Rakesh, ED, India

Shaleen Rakesh, Executive Director of VSO India

Welcome to India - one of the most colourful and culturally diverse countries in the world!

VSO has been working in India since 1994 and we’re really proud of what our volunteers has achieved over the last three decades:

  • Securing livelihoods of women and persons with disabilities,
  • Increasing demand and access to essential services,
  • Improving educational outcomes for children,
  • Getting young people from across India engaged in community action projects,
  • Advocating at a national level for to pass a disability bill.

India is the seventh-largest country by area and second-largest by population in the world. With this population boom comes the huge challenge of extreme poverty and inequality.

India’s population accounts for 32.9% of the world’s extreme poor and around 450 million Indians live below the poverty line.

Can you volunteer your time and skills to work with some of the most poor and marginalised communities in the world?

We need you: skilled, committed and passionate professionals to challenge the status quo and make a lasting impact around them.

VSO will support you through this journey to help you settle and bring about positive change.

Best wishes

Shaleen Rakesh

Youth Citizen Service (YCS)

Young people have the skills and energy to make a real difference in the fight against poverty.

We run a programme which aims to put young adults at the centre of efforts to tackle poverty and inequality.

Youth Citizen Service (YCS) is designed to promote youth volunteerism and provides development exposure to selected youth volunteers. They address local challenges and co-create sustainable solutions with local communities. The project fosters a continuum of youth development, citizenship and entrepreneurship.

Pravah is our implementation partner for the International Citizen Service (ICS) programme. ICS is an overseas volunteering programme for 18-25 year olds, funded by the UK Government’s Department for International Development.
