Since Independence in 1961, VSO has been bringing people together to fight poverty in Tanzania.
We’re motivated by impact. Recent independent evaluations of our projects have shown maternal and neonatal deaths reduced by up to 30%, school literacy and numeracy results improved by almost a third compared to control schools, and farmer incomes boosted four-fold through our support.
Huge challenges remain. Tanzania needs an educated workforce to reach its potential, but has the second lowest secondary school completion rates in East Africa. Malnutrition means 50% of children have stunted growth.
Our projects are making real progress, and I’m excited to see what we will achieve in a time of national growth of industry and opportunity.
If you’d like to support our work and be part of the transformation in Tanzania, we’d be delighted to hear from you.

What our partners say
"VSO improved quality of services to patients and introduced guidelines, checklists, monitoring charts which have been useful to our patients and also training to staff on the day to day activities.”
Hospital management team report, St Francis regional hospital (SFRH), Ifakara
"A strength of VSO is the flexibility in terms of planning, developing a project from the beginning, including everyone, consulting together … this means that there is flexibility in implementation and decisions … there is real partnership with VSO and this leads to better outcomes."
Tanzanian Ministry of Education and Vocational Training
"VSO works together with the participants and understand the real situation on the ground. They work with the stakeholders and see many problems and advise on how to solve them."
