Girls born into poor families in Nepal face many challenges, such as poverty, discrimination, forced marriage and domestic abuse. But for girls with disabilities, life is even harder and the risks much greater.
Many girls with disabilities spend their lives in isolation, unable to communicate with those around them. They cannot report abuse or access support.
Inequality and discrimination in schools, means that teachers are often not willing to help, or they don’t know to support their needs. Sadly, this means that most girls with disabilities will never reach their potential or escape poverty.
It’s not right. It’s not fair. But it CAN change.
VSO is helping vulnerable girls in Banke, Nepal, access education by matching them with a VSO volunteer. Volunteers identify girls’ needs and provide tailored support for them, their families, and their teachers, to fight inequality and create lasting change. Help vulnerable girls in Nepal who are missing out on an education
In Nepal, girls from poor families are forced to leave school early without completing their education. For many, the next step is marriage. It’s not their choice. Sadly, girls with disabilities like Parvati, often find that schools won’t even take them as teachers are not equipped to support their needs.
Parvati was born with a visual impairment and has lived a deeply isolated life. She was enrolled in a school but was forced to leave because her teachers weren't equipped for her needs. Even though she is bright and eager to work, she was forced to stay at home, cooking, cleaning and feeding the cattle. She never learnt to read or write and didn't get the chance to learn basic skills to gain a better future.
Parvati could have continued living in complete isolation, but thanks to supporters like you she is now attending a class designed to help vulnerable girls back into education.

Young girls are facing gender inequality and even forced marriage and domestic abuse. Girls with disabilities also face discrimination and bullying by teachers and students. It’s not right. It’s not fair.
VSO’s Empowering a New Generation of Adolescent Girls with Education (ENGAGE) project seeks to empower up to 2,340 highly marginalised, out-of-school girls – including those with disabilities – through education across three poverty-stricken districts in Nepal’s Terai region.
You can help us reach more vulnerable girls who are denied their chance to an education. VSO volunteers help protect girls with disabilities by helping them stay in school longer where they gain skills and confidence to break the cycle of poverty. Every girl who goes back into education and builds their livelihood sends a powerful message to other girls, and the whole community.
