Join VSO in strengthening English language education in Uzbekistan

Are you an experienced English language teacher eager to make a meaningful impact? VSO is launching an exciting initiative starting in September 2025 to enhance English proficiency and teaching quality in secondary schools across Uzbekistan.

As part of Uzbekistan’s national strategy to improve English language education, VSO volunteers will work alongside local teachers, students, and education leaders to strengthen the teaching system, enhance instructional methods, and equip students with essential language skills for their academic and professional futures. 

Through mentoring, training, and direct classroom support, you will help create a dynamic and engaging learning environment, ensuring that students gain confidence in English and that teachers develop the skills and resources they need to succeed.

This initiative aligns with VSO’s commitment to sustainable, high-quality education, providing ongoing professional development for local educators while supporting Uzbekistan’s vision of trilingual education.

  • Application closing date:  Apr 27, 2025, 00:00 (GMT).
  • Duration: 8 to 10 months beginning September 2025.
  • Interview date: As soon as possible.

  • Improve English proficiency among secondary students, helping them confidently pursue higher education and career opportunities. 
  • Enhance teaching quality by mentoring and training local English teachers in modern methodologies. 
  • Increase student engagement through extracurricular activities that make learning English enjoyable and practical. 
  • Strengthen local teachers’ capacity to deliver effective, interactive English lessons. 
  • Expand access to English learning materials, including audio, video, books, and EdTech tools. 
  • Empower students and teachers through culturally sensitive, student-centred learning approaches. 
  • Support education leaders in adopting and implementing best practices in English language teaching (ELT). 
  • Contribute to ELT reforms by improving coordination between key stakeholders in education.
  • Provide direct teaching support to secondary-level students. 

Who we're looking for

To succeed in this role, you should have: 

  • A bachelor’s degree or postgraduate qualification in education or a related field (e.g. English, linguistics, humanities, etc.).
  • Experienced teachers (including those from other subject areas) with a recognised English language teaching qualification such as CELTA, DELTA, TESOL, or TEFL (preferred).
  • Experience in English Language Teaching (ELT), including delivering blended teacher development and supporting teacher growth in low-resource settings.
  • A strong background in teacher training, mentoring, and providing feedback (pre-service and in-service).
  • Skills in developing interactive English learning materials and using learner-centred pedagogy with online platforms. 
  • Flexibility, adaptability, and cultural sensitivity to work effectively in diverse environments. 
  • The passion, adaptability, and commitment to make a lasting impact.

  • Basic local accommodation within the local community. 
  • A local living allowance that covers reasonable expenses. 
  • At least three weeks of annual leave in line with the schools' holidays period.  
  • Return flights to and from the project destination, ensuring a smooth and supported relocation for your volunteer placement. 

Induction 

  • Cultural and language training to help you settle in. 
  • Medical and security briefings to keep you safe. 
  • Opportunities to meet local volunteers and build a community.

Once you've finished volunteering 

When you finish volunteering with us, you'll find that your part of a community of VSO volunteers. We'll help you settle back into daily life, and the knowledge and experience you've picked up can help us design new projects with different partners. 

We'll invite you to:

  • give us feedback on your time volunteering, 
  • share your experiences to help the volunteers who come after you, 
  • connect with other former volunteers and supporters in your local area, 
  • take part in events with fellow returned volunteers, 
  • stay up to date with progress from your project, and tailored news from VSO.
