Transforming lives by tackling harmful social norms
Due to prevalent harmful social norms in rural Nepal, Laxman didn't support his wife in day-to-day life or in looking after their two children. Puja wasn't involved in any decision making and her sole role was to cook and clean the house. This all changed when the couple participated in a transformative 10-day couple session led by VSO expert volunteers.
Through a range of different exercises and discussions led by VSO volunteers, the couple learned what their rights and responsibilities are, how to find and combat gender norms that lead to gender-based violence, and how to foster a more balanced and harmonious relationship. They now share their learnings with their family and friends, continuing a ripple of change that will last for generations to come.
VSO in Nepal aims to reach over 13,000 girls, boys and couples and nearly 14,000 family members with vital response services and prevention activities to challenge harmful social norms and reduce violence against women and girls. Things CAN change.
