Women like Amrita* in rural Nepal are often discriminated against, stuck in violent marriages and with nowhere to turn for help. Shockingly, one in four women experience gender-based violence in their lifetime.
Amrita experienced this first-hand. She was badly mistreated at home and this became much worse after having a baby girl. Traditionally in rural Nepal, boys are seen as the future breadwinners, while girls are considered burdens. It's not right.
Things CAN change. With your help, VSO expert volunteers can work with communities to reduce violence and discrimination against women. VSO's support was life-changing for Amrita.

From violence to hope - Amrita's story
Amrita got married when she was just 21. She lived her with husband and in-laws, but life was hard for her. She was often shouted at, spoken to badly and blamed for any misfortune. Things became much worse when she gave birth to a baby girl – and not a son. Amrita started being physically abused daily. This had to stop.
VSO expert volunteers worked with Amrita and her husband so they would both join VSO’s couple sessions. The couple joined in discussions and exercises which challenged and removed the harmful social norms that lead to violence against women. Amrita's husband realised how he has mistreated his wife. His attitude in their relationship has improved, and he is consistently involving her in discussions and supporting her in decisions. This has transformed Amrita’s life.
VSO in Nepal aims to reach over 13,000 girls, boys and couples and nearly 14,000 family members with vital response services and prevention activities to challenge harmful social norms and reduce violence against women and girls. Things CAN change.

The impact of your gift
A regular donation can help create change that lasts for generations.

£15 could train a volunteer like Raj to work directly with couples and reduce violence in their home.

£10 could provide teenagers living in poverty with an essential learning kit so they can attend group classes.

£8 could provide women vulnerable to violence with a dignity kit so they are not reliant on their partners for essential items.
