The Conference of the Parties (COP) is the main decision-making body of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. It gathers member states to review climate progress, evaluate measures taken by countries, and develop strategies to meet global climate goals.
COP 29 was held in Azerbaijan in November 2024 and had as its central focus securing sufficient finance to address the impact of climate change.
Why is COP29 important to VSO?
COP29, called the "Finance COP," prioritises securing sufficient funding to address the impact of climate change. VSO advocates for equitable climate finance and involves youth and children in schools in adaptation planning. By showcasing inclusive approaches and supporting vulnerable groups, VSO works to ensure no one is left behind in the fight against climate change.
VSO at COP29
VSO collaborated with Child Fund, Allin Foundation, The Kenya Climate Change Working Group and the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance to co-create three impactful sessions:
- Child-led visioning for climate-resilient schools
- Youth innovating digital solutions for climate adaptation
- Finance tracking
In partnership with ChildFund, VSO also hosted an exhibition titled 'Youth and Children’s Voices on Display.' This space showcased stunning artwork and heartfelt messages from young people involved in climate adaptation planning across schools and communities in Bangladesh, Pakistan, Malawi, Kenya, and beyond. Their voices come to life in a powerful film where children and youth share their fears and hopes for a sustainable future.

Key achievements at COP29
- Countries committed to tripling finance to developing countries to $300 billion US dollars annually by 2035.
- Carbon Market Rules: Agreements on global regulations for carbon credits were made to fund initiatives like clean energy and reforestation.
