Will you help women turn waste into work and transform their lives?
Vulnerable women in Kenya are working in dangerous conditions every day. They work tirelessly on Kenya’s dumpsites collecting rubbish to recycle, but they are exploited and abused. They return every morning because they have no choice. They barely earn enough for food and clean water.
It’s not right. But with your help, it can change.
VSO volunteers are working alongside women to share life-changing skills, like how to select high-value waste and sell it for the best price to almost double their income. As well as providing protective equipment like gloves. Will you help women have a better, safer livelihood?
Please give today and help women turn waste into work and a better future.

Will you help ensure women’s futures aren’t thrown away?
In Nairobi’s Dandora slum, home to 140,000 people, lorries dump up to 2,000 tonnes of waste daily. In this hazardous environment, women work tirelessly, collecting recyclables which they sell to buy food and water for their families.
Without protective equipment, they face constant risks of cuts, infections, and disease. Many live in cramped slums where waste spills into their homes. With no safe childcare options, mothers often bring their children to the dumpsites, exposing them to toxic waste and dangerous machinery.
These women are vital to recycling efforts but are undervalued, exploited, and paid unfairly low prices for their hard work. It’s not right, but with your help, it can change.
VSO volunteers are working side by side with women waste pickers, providing the skills, tools, and support they need to:
- Work safely with protective clothing to avoid injuries.
- Earn fairly by learning to sort and prioritise high-value items.
- Access fair prices through buyback centres.
- Live safely in areas plagued by high levels of crime.
- Keep their children safe by creating safe childcare centres near dumpsites where children can play.
VSO has an ambitious plan to help 3,900 waste pickers to improve their livelihoods and for 6,000 tonnes of waste to be collected. Will you help?
Please, donate today, and help make sure women’s futures aren’t thrown away.
Here is how every £1 is spent

We value every gift that you give, and will always put it straight to work as quickly as we can. In 2023-24, 85p of every £1 you gave went directly towards tackling poverty worldwide. 15p was spent on the day-to-day running of the charity and raising the next £1 so that we can help even more people this year.
