Challenging the norms that put women at risk
One in four women in Nepal experience gender-based violence.
Deeply embedded harmful social norms can force girls into early marriage, deny them an education and leave women and girls more vulnerable to discrimination and violence. Girls forced out of school and into marriage, while they're still children. Being without an education, puts girls at higher risk.
Puja experience this inequality at home. Her husband Laxman believed childcare and housework where women's responsibilities. He didn't recognise how this affect Puja's wellbeing or their relationship. He wouldn't feed their children if Puja wasn't at home and did not support her daily.
Helping families build an equal future
This is not right or fair. Thanks to VSO supporters equipping local volunteers, Puka and Laxman took part of a 10-day couples session. They learned that gender-based violence goes beyond physical abuse and includes marital rape, emotional abuse, and gender-based discrimination. This helped Pulham realise how the social norms in Nepal were causing a power imbalance between men and women. He understood how these norms, and he, were causing harm to his wife – and family. He realised his equal responsibilities in household chores, in communicating, and being a partner Puja could rely on.
