Gift an education kit today
Without even a pencil or a schoolbag, it is almost impossible for a girl to keep up with her education. In communities facing poverty and instability, many girls miss out on school simply because they do not have the basic tools they need to learn.
Your gift can equip a girl with an education kit, including a schoolbag, books, pencils, pens, and essential supplies. With your help, girls can return to school, stay engaged in lessons, and feel confident in the classroom.
Every day a girl is out of school, her risk of forced marriage and abuse increases. By providing an education kit, you help protect girls by keeping them learning, supported, and safe in school. Give today and help spark change, until no one stands alone.
Girls like Alice are in danger
In Karamoja, Uganda, people keep cattle and grow food, but many live in extreme poverty. Conflict and climate change are making day-to-day survival even harder.
Girls have been attacked on their way to school or collect water. They also face violence at home. For many, school is the safest place to be, but girls like Alice don't get that far. Many families see little value in educating girls whose role is generally to work in the home, and without this safety, can find themselves in danger.
Alice was living with her aunt who was abusive and didn't let her go to school. Then, when she 13, she was raped and fell pregnant. She wasn't safe to stay at home. She had nowhere to turn. But thanks to VSO volunteers who sparked change in her community, she found a rescue centre.
How you can help
Donate to VSO and you could help provide girls like Alice with a safe place to stay, a chance to go to school, and support to rebuild their lives.
VSO volunteers like Alfred are helping to set up rescue centres in schools across Karamoja, where girls can go when they’re at risk of early marriage or pregnancy. They’re training teachers to support girls like Alice, who have often experienced violence.
Alice has now been living in the rescue centre for four years with her daughter, Patience*. Trained by VSO, Alice's teachers provide engaging lessons that inspire the whole class to keep learning. While Alice is in school, Patience is in nursery. An education will give them both a safer, brighter future.
But without the help of people like you, Alice would have had nowhere to go and no one to support her to rebuild a life. She would still be trapped in a dangerous home without the skills to provide for herself or her daughter.
It’s urgent.
This is a critical time. So far, VSO is working in 193 schools in Karamoja to help girls stay in school or return, but there are 400 state schools in total. Your help is urgently needed to ensure that there is an education and a safe place for any girl at risk of being forced out of school and into early marriage and motherhood.
Please donate to help give a girl like Alice a safe place to stay, an education and support to rebuild their life.
