Our work in Zimbabwe
One of the greatest challenges facing southern Africa, and Zimbabwe in particular, is the HIV and AIDS pandemic. An estimated 1.3 million are living with HIV.
We’re using education to make a difference. As well as HIV and AIDS training and awareness programmes, we’re working in several districts to empower women and girls.
Prisoners in Zimbabwe are twice as likely to have HIV and AIDS than the general population, so we’re working with local partners in several prisons too.
Through a combination of education and counselling, we’re helping to raise awareness and get people talking, an important step towards lowering the stigma and making real social and behavioural change.
"Volunteering in Zimbabwe is wonderful. I enjoy VSO’s approach of sharing of skills and experiences – not only using your own, but also gaining new skills that you can share more widely. Zimbabwean people are keen to learn and open to working with others.”
Tokozile Dhodho, Zimbabwean national volunteer with VSO and Batanai HIV service organisation
Youth volunteering in Zimbabwe
VSO ICS volunteers work in Rusape in north-eastern Zimbabwe. The programme aims to raise awareness of sexual and reproductive health and the services that are available locally. Volunteers use a range of fun participatory activities such as peer group sessions, drama, role-play and sport. There’s also a focus on using local media and engaging local people in community health volunteering.
If you are a Zimbabwean national interested in volunteering, please contact our local team directly using the details below.
