Save newborn babies' lives

Help bring a newborn safely into the world

So many women in Sierra Leone lose their precious babies in labour. Your gift could help provide the training to a midwife and the equipment they need to safely deliver newborns.

Thank you.

Donations will be distributed across all types of VSO’s work in health, education and livelihoods. Charity Registration 313757 (England and Wales) SCO39117 (Scotland).

Help bring a newborn safely into the world

Every year in Sierra Leone, thousands of babies die in their first month of life.

Yeano Kamara, Sierra Leone VSO/Peter Caton

“When I noticed I was pregnant I was happy because I hoped that I would now be having our first child, given that my last baby was stillborn.”

New mum Yeano with baby daughter Sally, born safely after having a V-scan.

Shockingly, nearly half of mothers in rural areas go through pregnancy without healthcare and then face labour without a trained midwife to help them. So many women endure the agony of losing their newborn.

But you can help in the battle to save the lives of babies by donating today.

V-scans: The difference between life and death

To help in their battle, we are equipping clinics with V-scans (portable ultrasound machines). Local midwives and nurses are learning to screen expectant mums and look for dangerous complications that could be the difference between life and death.

Why VSO?

At VSO we work with trained professionals (doctors, nurses, teachers and tradespeople) who volunteer to share their skills and knowledge.

We have been fighting poverty with communities in developing countries for 60 years and today we work in 24 countries around the world.

Your donation will ensure volunteers like Kiran can deliver long-lasting change for the communities that need it most.
