VSO named as major charity partner of the Shakespeare Lives campaign, a major global programme for 2016 celebrating Shakespeare’s works and his influence on culture, education and society on the 400th anniversary of his death, launched today by British Council and the GREAT Britain campaign.

The creative partnership will use the power of Shakespeare’s anniversary year to give real help to children in some of the world’s poorest communities and to raise funds and awareness of VSO's work in education globally.

October 26th, 2015:  As part of the European Commission Certification Mechanism under the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency, VSO International has been certified as a volunteer sending organisation for the first time.

VSO is the world’s leading independent international development organisation that works through volunteers to fight poverty in developing countries.  The certification is part of a process to identify organisations to run the proposed EU Aid Volunteers Initiative through DG ECHO.

In London last night leading figures from the worlds of business and international development gathered to launch VSO Knowledge Exchange.  Seed funded by the UK government’s Department for International Development (DFID) and run by Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO), VSO Knowledge Exchange offers skilled employees in the private sector a way to volunteer to help change the lives of people in some of the world’s poorest places.

It is now 100 days until world leaders meet at the United Nations in New York to agree on a new agenda for people and the planet – the Sustainable Development Goals. 

The Sustainable Development Goals map out 17 goals for all nations to end poverty, reduce inequality and sustain the environment to 2030.  The Goals mark a new era in international development and the current draft acknowledges the important role of volunteering in their implementation.
