Vanuatu opposition leader calls for minister to resign

26/01/2010

The opposition leader of Vanuatu has requested that the country's current minister of internal affairs step down from his post after claiming that he compromised the nation's ownership of the Mathew and Hunters islands.

Ham Lini called for the resignation of Moana Carcasses Kalosil this week, reported Radio New Zealand, after the latter politician declared that ownership of the islands can be shared by Vanuatu and France.

Mr Carcasses visited New Caledonia recently, where he made the suggestion to representatives from the European nation.

According to the news provider, his proposals involved the two uninhabited islands becoming a condominium shared by the countries.

Mr Lini has now alleged that this was an act of disloyalty to the people of Vanuatu, who he claimed have already allocated a lot of money to the atolls.

In other political news, Vanuatu's prime minister almost lost his post last year after an administrative error expelled him from office during a summit held in Trinidad and Tobago.
