Chinese children's health 'threatened by stress at school'

21/01/2010

The health of youngsters in China is being threatened by the stress they come up against at school, it has been discovered.

A new investigation carried out by the University College London's Centre for International Health and Development found that children in China face psychological problems due to pressures in the classroom and from their parents.

Overall, 81 per cent of the 2,191 pupils questioned in Zhejiang said that they worry a lot about exams, while a further 63 per cent said that they are concerned about being punished by their teachers.

Of the respondents, 73 per cent said that their parents had physically reprimanded them in the past.

"Measures to reduce unnecessary stress on children in schools should be introduced urgently," stated the study's authors.

Last month, the Chinese government revealed that it will allocate a total of two billion yuan (£182.4 million) to schools in the country that accept the children of rural migrant workers
