Schools 'being used to shelter flood victims' in Tanzania

13/01/2010

The education system in Tanzania is being hindered due to school buildings being used as temporary shelters, it has been reported.

Following floods that affected around 33,000 people in the country and left the region of Kilosa particularly damaged, approximately 9,000 people are still homeless in the region, the BBC informed.

They have been taking shelter in local classrooms, meaning that the start of the school season has been delayed this year and children's education affected adversely.

According to the news provider's correspondent in the area Josphat Mwanzi, people are living in Lwamulilo primary school in unclean conditions.

Overall, 500 pupils have been prevented from resuming their studies, the head teacher reportedly told him.

Statistics compiled by Kenya's ministry of education and vocational training show that 28,600 youngsters left school before their education was completed from 2004 to 2008, AllAfrica.com reported last month.
