A British charity has sent a shipment of computers and other items to Papua New Guinea in time for Christmas.

Computers for Charities (CfC), which is based in Halisham, has sent relief and aid items to the country, which is more than 8,000 miles away, so that the underprivileged will receive them ahead of the festive season, reports the Johnston Press.

The items will be distributed among several community projects that have been in touch with the organisation in recent months requesting help to improve the facilities available in the country.

Included in the aid packages are computers, medical supplies, hand tools, clothing and shoe boxes filled with essentials for elderly people, the news agency informs.

"It has been a pleasure to provide support for this initiative, which, while normally taking months of preparation, has been achieved in weeks," founder of CfC Simon Rooksby is quoted as stating.

Meanwhile, last month four new libraries aimed at giving children greater access to books and learning materials were opened in Papua New Guinea, ABC Radio Australia News reported.
