Tajikistan 'receives further aid from Slovakia'

17/11/2009

Tajikistan has received more aid from the European nation of Slovakia following natural disasters that occurred in the Asian country earlier this year.

According to Radio Slovakia International, the country has sent almost ten tonnes of winter clothing and medical supplies as part of the second phase of its aid programme for the region.

The first stage of its humanitarian efforts included the donation of field tents, power generators, medication and appliances in May, the news provider informs.

It quotes the foreign affairs ministry as saying that Slovakia's ambassador to Tajikistan Jozef Macisak handed over the second delivery in Tashkent on 12 November 2009.

In the spring, heavy rain brought about mudslides that caused extensive damage to homes and villages, leaving around 10,000 people without accommodation, the press agency informs.

Last month, Unicef confirmed that over two million children in Tajikistan have been successfully vaccinated against measles and rubella as part of its campaign to improve health among youngsters in the country.
