Swine flu continues to spread across Sri Lanka

30/06/2009

Health officials in Sri Lanka have confirmed another case of swine flu in the country.

The Medical Research Institute announced that a 22-year-old female has been admitted to the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) in Angoda. It is understood that she had recently arrived in Sri Lanka from Australia, reports the Colombo Page.

Dr Anura Senanayake, director of the IDH, confirmed that that this latest case raised the total number of swine flu patients to 15, with nine still in hospital receiving treatment for the condition.

Last week, the Sri Lankan Daily Mirror reported that a Sri Lankan student who had come from London recently was found to be positive for swine flu and the majority of the other cases involve people who have recently visited Australia.

The World Health Organisation is advising people to take basic steps to reduce their risk of swine flu infection such as regularly washing hands and avoiding close contact with people who are already ill.
