We have a number of programmes around the world to help improve the rights of women around the world. Here are some more examples:

Ghana

The Women in Agricultural Extension programme is a joint project between VSO and Ghana’s Ministry of Food and Agriculture in the Upper West Region. It aims to train women in agricultural activities in order to get them actively involved in agriculture.

Ethiopia

With the support of VSO Ethiopia, Haramaya University has taken major steps to improve girls’ access to quality education, including establishing a hardship fund to provide females with materials necessary for to continue going to school. The university has also created a legally-binding anti-sexual harassment policy that was distributed to all students.

Jamaica

Working in partnership with government minisitries and community groups CUSO-VSO programme has developed a programme that supports women and children to have greater and more equal access to justice.

Cameroon

Innovative programmes such as Mother Teacher Associations (MTAs) in Cameroon have worked with mothers in order to advocate for girls going to school. The MTAs main activities are making parents and the community aware the importance of girls going to school. The MTAs have successfully increased the number of both girls and boys enrolment and attendance in schools.

Zambia

VSO Zambia and its partners have been working to increase women's representation on village and area development committees. They have also noted an increase focus on gender balance in local councils and national government.

Why volunteer?

Volunteering is one of the most rewarding ways you can make a real difference to people living in the toughest circumstances. Most people join us because they want to give something back and find they get much more in return.
