How we do it

What is diaspora volunteering?

We recognise there are many diaspora communities who have a particular interest in using their skills and contacts in their countries of heritage. Many people from diaspora communities are already forming professional networks and organisations committed to developing worthwhile programmes "back home".

VSO's diaspora volunteering initiative is about using our expertise in volunteer development and management to support these organisations to develop their own strategic international volunteering programmes. Through this we continue to support the growth in diversity and impact of international volunteers.

The support we offer diaspora partners

Diaspora organisations may receive support from VSO in four main areas:

  • Research of needs and partners, which may include financial support for a research visit to the specified country, and implementation of the pilot phase of the volunteer programme.
  • Development and implementation of volunteer management systems, including monitoring and evaluation, placement development, orientation, training and capacity building, through training and one-to-one advice.
  • Fundraising training and support to ensure the programme is sustainable.
  • In-country support from VSO's Programme Offices.
